How did you get involved with UNAVSA?
I truly think that my UNAVSA involvement was based on really good timing. I was a part of a leadership camp (Lên Đường Camp) which was held at the same city as UNAVSA-9 in Minneapolis, Minnesota . From there, I met Tuan Duong, who was the first person to introduce to me to UNAVSA. I told him I was really interested in being involved with Vietnamese communities so he introduced me to Thy Bui and Gee-Wey Yue. I immediately got involved with UVSA South and a few years later, Thy and Elizabeth Nguyen encouraged me to apply for UNAVSA-11 staff in Dallas and I have been involved ever since.

Tell us about a favorite memory working with UNAVSA.
My favorite memory would have to be the culture show blackout during my UNAVSA-13 Entertainment Co-Directorship. I know it seems like a very strange favorite memory, but it was a scenario that really tested our committee’s persistence and ability to change a situation for the better. My biggest takeaway from that experience, was that you cannot control everything but know that everything happens for a reason. Lastly, the moment you are ready to quit is usually the moment right before a miracle happens, so no matter how difficult or unexpected life gets, never ever give up.

What is your work attire? How do you feel about it?
My work attire is business professional. Nothing makes me feel more confident than a pair of stiletto heels and an edgy blazer!

What does your workplace, workspace, or desk look like?
I have my own office in administration which is filled with metrics and positive quotes. I try not to spend too much time in my office since my main goal is to be visible throughout the hospital and assist with any process improvements that focus on patient centered care.

What are your thoughts on what it means to be professional in 2018?
I was always taught that you should always dress for the job that you want so how you present yourself each and every day is extremely important! In addition, being professional means owning your tasks and responsibilities and doing them to the best of your ability. In fact, I encourage all of my employees to act like they are the CEOs of their own domain and recognize the importance of their responsibilities by owning their actions, which is a big part of being a true professional in the work world.

How has UNAVSA helped you become the person you are today?
Over the years, I had the opportunity to work with talented individuals who really challenged me and motivated me to become a better leader. I was more aware of my strengths and weaknesses, but most importantly, I saw my potential as a leader and have applied the skills that I have gained throughout my UNAVSA experiences towards my professional career and personal life.

What are your hopes for the future of UNAVSA? How would you continue to support UNAVSA and your own community?
I hope that the UNAVSA family continues to grow and continuously improve each year. UNAVSA has a potential to really expand and bring more awareness to young professionals so my hope is to have UNAVSA be even bigger and better than when I started UNAVSA journey. As an alumni, I hope to be able to give back to the organization by providing support for new leaders and by sponsoring UNAVSA in the near future.

Do you have any last words such as shoutouts or advices for potential UNAVSA Alumni?
My advice would be to always remember your “why”. Your “why” is what drives you and is what gives us purpose into everything that we do. So for those that are interested in being involved with UNAVSA alumni, remind yourself on how much you have gained throughout your UNAVSA experiences and find your reason to give back.
A HUGE shout out to UVSA South and all of my former committee members, CORR, and directors! (#famILY, #caliENTe, #uniCORRn, #popCORRn, #DreamTeam13, and #WeOldButWeCareAlumni) My UNAVSA experience would not have been the same without each and every one of you. Lastly, to all of our current committee members and directors, thank you for continuing and believing in UNAVSA.
