Why was this person selected as “Member of the Year” for your organization? What was the criteria to be a recipient of this award?
Vi Huynh is the University of Central Florida’s VASA member of the year because she holds no boundaries to what opportunities and impact she can have to different communities. She is a person that looks to translate what she has learned from her many encounters and experiences to help herself and her community grow.
The criteria to be a recipient of this award is to not only reach out to your Vietnamese culture and community, but to grow and live within it as well. Vi goes far beyond this criteria, reaching out and supporting her region and many others. As a media director, a senior advisor, a family leader and a hospitality director, Vi takes on the opportunity to grow in different communities. However, it is her commitment to understand the different perspectives and environments when taking these leadership roles that makes her a recipient of this award. She is not only a member, she is not only a leader – but a part of a growing community.
Describe the roles the nominee has held in his/her/their community and how these roles have influenced your organization. Provide examples.
For 2019-2020, Vi Huynh has taken multiple leadership roles. As a former media director of her local VSA, she became a senior advisor to help the next officer board by providing advice in photography, graphic design and a few executive decisions. Vi is currently the co-Media director for UVSASE, as she works alongside Ben Nguyen to make the Southeast’s media production the best across all regions. She continues to work and learn from her co-director and associates so that she can improve her portfolio and take her committee to new heights. She takes pride in her photography and brings out the best in the Southeast. She always has an eye for the scenery, what posture to hold for a headshot, why it is important to consider the direction of natural light, etc. She will take the time to hone in on her craft, as well as work with you and help you understand her vision.
What qualities does the nominee have that makes him/her/them stand out within your organization? Provide examples.
Vi is a challenger. As an advisor, as a director, she wants to understand others’ point of views and put everything into perspective. Her advice and input always invites debating and constructive criticism.
As senior advisor, she has challenged her successors by asking for their perspective in approaching a video or graphic. Asking “what is your vision or message with this video” or “why did you go for this style and format for this birthday graphic.” She doesn’t seek to correct, but to gain understanding and help her peers develop the habit to take in feedback and make the most of it.
