Outstanding Virtual Program

Provide a detailed description of the philanthropic program and the population it served. Details MUST include: date of event, number of participants, program purpose (goals, objectives, etc.), use of resources (finances, community support, etc.), marketing techniques and evaluation processes.

Coin Drive was one of our Philanthropy Project campaigns that we hosted in support of UNAVSA’s 2018-2019 Philanthropy beneficiary, Children of Vietnam. Children of Vietnam aims to break the cycle of children’s poverty in Vietnam and provide aid to children with essential resources like water and quality education. Our Coin Drive Week in 2019 was held from April 15th to 18th on a populated street on our campus, where more than 50 members contributed to the coin drive. Coin Drive served as a way for our club’s families (Blue Ox, Red Dragon, Green Snake, and Yellow Monkey) to earn points toward their Family of the Semester point system. Each family had their own jug where they put their money in. Coins counted as positive points, while bills counted as negative points. Members can put dollar bills into other families’ containers to improve their chances of winning. We made digital flyers and mainly publicized through Social Media (Facebook event, Instagram, Snapchat story, etc.) and word of mouth. We utilized our planning packet to plan the logistics (for example, materials needed, location booking, backup plans, etc.) and Excel spreadsheets (to keep track of officers’ and interns’ sign-ups for tabling and update our Live scoreboard daily for public view), etc. During the tabling week, we had officers and interns went around campus to handed out flyers and promoted about our Philanthropy Project to spread awareness. At the end of each day, we used a bank’s coin counting machine to count the value of the coins and dollar bills. At the end of this week-long campaign, we were able to raise $3890.49 for Children of Vietnam. Additionally, the proceeds of our 41st Annual Culture Show: Empowerment of the Vietnamese American on April 14th 2019 went towards the philanthropy project Children of Vietnam. After publicizing with trailers, flyers on social media and more, we had nearly a full house by filling up 431 of 450 seats at the theater.

How did the organization overcome any challenges that arose while planning and implementing the cultural program? What was the outcome of the program in terms of goals met, successes, and failures?

While we were able to raise a large amount of donation for the foundation by the end of the year, we encountered a few challenges throughout the year in terms of finding more ways to be hands-on involved with the foundation. We were not able to directly host any volunteering or workshop events with Children of Vietnam. We also actively promoted knowledge about our philanthropy project throughout these fundraisers and the Culture Show. Compared to last year’s Coin Drive fundraising amount of $1650.58, we managed to fundraise $3890.49, 235.7% more this year. In total with all of our fundraisers, we raised over $6000 in total for the philanthropy project.
