In response to the Essex Lorry tragedy on October 23, 2019, UNAVSA released a statement grieving alongside Vietnamese communities:
UNAVSA sends our condolences to those affected by the Essex lorry tragedy as the UK government continues its investigation of this case of human trafficking. On October 23rd, 2019, 39 Vietnamese individuals were found dead in an articulated lorry in Essex, UK as a result of a botched human trafficking case. The current investigation has since highlighted poor living conditions and lack of opportunities in developing countries, such as Vietnam, that could lead to people risking their savings, health and safety, and ultimately lives for a chance to overcome struggles and living challenges.
Human trafficking is an ongoing global issue—this event is only one of the many tragedies that occur as a result of unjust living conditions. We encourage our constituents and allies to share our deepest condolences to the victims and their families during these difficult times.
