Cabinet Staff

These individuals are part of our year-round cabinet committees, including Alumni Relations, CPP, Civic Engagement, and VSAcademy. They are responsible for the general operations of UNAVSA as well as generating engaging initiatives for our constituents throughout the year.

Alumni Relations


The Alumni Relations committee will work directly with the UNAVSA External Vice President with the support of other Executive Board members. The Alumni Director position will be held by a minimum of one person and a maximum of two people. The Alumni Relations Cabinet’s listed responsibilities, but not limited to are: Alumni Mentorship Program, Alumni Directory, Leadership Conference Alumni Programming, Various forms of year-round alumni engagement

As a member of the VSA community since 2010, April Nguyen (she/her/hers) is passionate about leveraging her pharmacy & public health background to promote a better future for the community. After graduating from pharmacy school in her home state of California, she is now a Regulatory Affairs Manager in Boston and continues to grow as a VSA major in her role as the Alumni Relations Co-Director. She has previously served as her VSA’s IVP, NEIVSA CORR, and UNAVSA CPP Engagement and Selection Director. She enjoys kickboxing, MMA, and working on her six pack one laugh at a time.

Nathalie Trinh is a Vietnamese Canadian, born and raised in the city of Toronto,
Ontario. She graduated from McMaster University with a B. Sc in Biology and a minor
in Psychology. Nathalie’s journey with VSA started when she joined as a general
member with McMaster’s VSA, going on to serve on the UVSA Eastern Canada team
taking on Presidency during the 2019-2020 term and other VSA regions in North
America. Nathalie is committed to dedicating time to supporting the Vietnamese
Canadian community through her work with the VSA community and volunteering for
Viet-based charity organizations. She has a strong passion for encouraging young
leaders and help lead their growth. In her free time, Nathalie likes to cook, sing
karaoke, and to catch up with friends.

Alan Trinh is a 4th-year pharmacy student from the University of Hawai’i at Hilo-Daniel
K. Inouye College of Pharmacy. Alan is a member of UVSA SoCal from his high school
days of VSA to reviving the UVSA SoCal ACE Mentorship Program before leaving for
pharmacy school. He served on the UNAVSA-10 programming committee, served as
UVSA SoCal ACE Mentorship Chair, and held directorship roles for UVSA SoCal Tet
Festival such as for the Miss Vietnam of Southern California pageant. As a health
professional, he is interested in doing research in health literacy and disparities in
underserved communities, especially in Southeast Asian American populations.

The Civic Engagement Committee (CEC) will lead both educational and mobilization efforts of the general UNAVSA membership to promote civic knowledge and action. The committee will be in charge of researching and keeping constituents up to date on historical and current events that influence the Greater Vietnamese community, as well as on social movements in Canada, the United States, and worldwide. Lastly, the committee will collect and distribute resources to aid members in best practices of civic engagement. The Core team focuses on developing resources and projects introducing constituents to various topics related to civic engagement.

Tiffany is currently a 4th yr in the PharmD program at MCPHS in Boston. She loves
photography, watching anime, doing arts and crafts, and spending time with family
and friends. Even though it snows a lot in Boston, she also likes to keep active by playing volleyball and tennis. Some of her passions are traveling (she makes fun vlogs
on Youtube of her travels) and she’s a huge foodie (catch her on foodiegram!) Her

Nicole Phan was born and raised in Cupertino, California and is finishing her Bachelors of Science in Public Health and minor in biological sciences at San Jose State University. Her journey within the VSA community started in college when she set out to search for her university’s VSA. Spending more time within SJSU VSA and NorCal UVSA led her to UNAVSA and her involvement ever since has fueled her passion in continuing to empower others through culture, community, and leadership. Charlie Nguyen (he/him/his) is a fourth-year student at Johns Hopkins University
studying public health and economics. Hailing from a predominantly Vietnamese
community in Garden Grove, California, he is interested in the relationships between
institutional oppression and mental well-being among immigrant, refugee, and
Southeast Asian communities. In addition to helping young AAPIs vote through his
work as the Social Media and Branding Manager for the 2020 Project, Charlie is
currently involved in work with Baltimore immigrant communities and the Center for
Social Concern at Johns Hopkins.

Civic Engagement Policy

Born and raised in Vancouver, Canada, Kelly Tran is a keen learner about the world, and an active advocate for empowering compassionate leaders. As Chair of the
Human Rights Committee for VCCGVS (Vietnamese Canadian Community of Greater
Vancouver Society), and a partner of VOICE, she has the honour of representing
human rights activists in Asia and Vietnam, and speak on their behalf to garner
awareness on the issues and injustices that they face. A few instances of these issues
involve Formosa, media censorship, and freedom of speech and expression.
Additionally as founder of the VSA at Simon Fraser University, alongside her
involvement with UNAVSA, TEDx, and UNICEF, she is still on a journey to learn and
develop as a leader within her own communities and beyond.

Chris Phan grew up in University Place, Washington, and graduated from Stanford in

Jamal’s VSA journey began at LSU-VSA in the Gulf Coast Region. He became involved with UVSA Gulf Coast by being part of the Alumni Relations Cabinet and the Logistic Committee for Gulf Coast Summit. CPP Audit


The CPP Audit Committee will work closely with the previous year’s beneficiary to oversee that funds are ethically being appropriated according to the project proposal as presented at the UNAVSA conference. The CPP Audit team manages the project timeline and ensures the beneficiary will adhere to the project timeline proposed.

Bosco “The Bosco” Bosco Nguyen is a Pure Mathematics Graduate from the Univeristy of Calgary. First introduced to the greater VSA space at the UNAVSA-16 conference held in Vancouver, he has been eager to contribute to the community. CPP Campaign


The CPP Campaign Committee will serve as the main point of contact when the Beneficiary has been chosen by the constituents at the Annual UNAVSA Leadership Conference. The Campaign Committee is essential in raising funds to meet the goal of the proposed project set forth by the Beneficiary and to educate our constituents on the goals of said project.

Tina Do was born and raised in Portland, Oregon and graduated with a B.A. in Community Health Education at the Oregon Health & Science University- Portland State University. She recently worked at a non-profit organization that helps improve the health and well-being of her community by ensuring access to care, services, and resources for those who need it most. Tina has been on Portland State University VSA executive boards of other student organizations as President, Vice President, publicity and recruitment coordinator. For her first UNAVSA she stepped up and became a family leader for UNAVSA-14. Beside VSA leadership roles she is also a mentor for her local Vietnamese Eucharistic Youth Movement, a non-profit organization for over 8 years. Outside of her involvement with VSA Tina likes to spend her time doing arts and crafts, traveling, outdoor sports such as snowboarding, tennis, hiking, and music festivals.

CPP Engagement


The Engagement committee facilitates and maintains the relationship between UNAVSA and past CPP applicants & beneficiaries. The team works closely with each beneficiary to showcase the results of past CPP projects by providing reports of the progress, results, and impact of UNAVSA’s efforts. The team is responsible for engaging with current and past CPP prospects to build partnerships with each organization to provide direct opportunities for constituents to engage with these nonprofits outside of just fundraising.

Jenny Tran resides in the New England region and is a senior at the University of Connecticut. Her first exposure to VSA was at UNAVSA-14 in New Orleans, LA. Since then, she has become heavily involved with VSA at the regional and continental level. She is an active member of New England IVSA, having been a part of summit and leadership camp planning staff, and is currently the Secretary for NEIVSA. Outside of her region, Jenny was a member of the UNAVSA-15 Entertainment Committee and is now going into her third term as CPP Selection Director. When not doing homework or VSA work, Jenny works as a cantor at several local churches, enjoys watching The Bachelor franchise, and taking naps.

Kevin Cao is the youngest of 5 children, attending community college whilst working to develop both professional and personal skills. He currently sits with an Associates Degree in Business Administration from Northern Virginia Community College, and works full time for Starbucks. He is in the middle of transitioning for both academics and career, as he is attempting to transfer to university to finish his Bachelor’s, and leave Starbucks to pursue a career in finances. David Tran is a Vietnamese-American born and raised in Metro Detroit, Michigan. David is currently a third year student at Michigan State University pursuing International Relations with a minor in Asian Pacific American Studies. David’s upbringing was in a hometown where he wasn’t able to connect with people of similar backgrounds like his but it instead left him with a unique experience and fondness for Middle Eastern cuisine and culture. The Marketing & Public Relations (MPR) Cabinet is a year-round operating committee. MPR oversees all official publications, announcements, and releases from UNAVSA while creating our branding and marketing strategies. MPR provides support across all of UNAVSA’s various projects, including cabinet, CPP, and our annual leadership conference. Allan Frances (he/him/his) is an Alumnus from the Mid-Atlantic Region, coming from Old Dominion University located in Norfolk, VA, with a degree in Criminal Justice. During his time in MAUVSA, he has served as one of the Public Relations Chair, and Internal Vice President. He also dedicated his time towards out-of-region events, such as NEIVSA’s VES-6 and VES-7 and NELC-2, and Northwest UVSA’s 2020 Summit. Currently in Virginia Beach, VA. but he will be moving up to the DMV area this year. Aside from VSA, he currently works as an Administrative Assistant, a registered USPA powerlifter, and known for his DJ alias “[alpha]king.”

Don Hua (he/him/his) hails from the Midwest Region and attended the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He studied biomedical engineering with intentions of applying to a Medical Scientist Training Program in 2021. Don became involved with regional events just last year attending VIA-1 for the first time. Since 2019 he has participated in every UVSA-Midwest event which led to his involvement with UNAVSA this past summer. Despite the pandemic, Don has been Zoom hopping from region to region attending event after event to show support for all the wonderful people he met at UNAVSA-VE. In his free time, Don enjoys anime/manga, fitness activities, cooking, and the meme economy.

The Web Development/Management committee manages all information systems, communications, and databases for UNAVSA year-round (including conference IT needs). Thomas is a network engineer for a software company. He is a graduate of George Mason University (GMU) with a B.S. in Information Technology and a minor in Business. At GMU, Thomas started his administrative career within the GMUVSA as an Intern and later as the Culture Chair. During this time, he co-wrote and co-directed the Culture Shows for 2015 and 2016. Thomas has attended a couple of the regional conferences for the Mid-Atlantic Union of VSAs (MAUVSA) in past years. In the future, Thomas hopes to involve himself in his local communities and contribute to mutual aid.

VSAcademy


VSAcademy Cabinet (VSA) exists to create and promote year-round online programming and learning resources that supplement programming from the annual Leadership Conference and One Day Seminars. VSAcademy’s main mission is to educate constituents with original content in the form of articles, videos, podcasts, etc., forming a centralized resource hub. Many topics are best taught in collaborative workshop environments that allow members to discuss and apply learnings. Other topics, where are more valuable when presented in expository and authoritative approaches. VSAcademy will take lead in topics exclusive to the committee as well as cross collaboration topics with other committees that span across cultural, personal, professional, organizational development and civic engagement. At VSAcademy, we are all about the love of knowledge and delivering a beautiful learning experience. VSAcademy offers curated and created content targeted to the Vietnamese American & Canadian experience.
