Most Outstanding Cultural Program Nomination: University of Oregon

Describe the cultural program. Details MUST include: Date of event, number of participants, program purpose (i.e. goals and objectives), member involvement, use of resources (financial, etc.), marketing techniques and evaluations process.

On May 20th, 2019, UO VSA helped facilitate the ADPI Night Market in which numerous Asian, Desi, and Pacific Islander clubs at the University of Oregon came together to hold performances, share cultural dishes and introduce themselves to the public. The purpose was to unite numerous clubs under one roof to celebrate Asian Pacific American Heritage Month. This year’s theme for APAHM month was “Together We Rise”.

How did this cultural program serve the campus and/or community? What were the cultural program’s goals and how did it meet them?

As a member of the ADPI community, UOVSA continually works to establish solidarity among our multicultural peers and make our presence known on a predominantly white campus. Our VSA members participated in the boys fan dance as well as delivered spring rolls during the event. In order to promote the event, our media team created posters that were hung up as flyers all over campus.

How did the organization overcome any challenges that arose while planning and implementing the cultural program?

One of the main challenges that we faced was being able to coordinate and bring together the groups to put on a show for the public. In order to succeed, we learned to collaborate and utilize every members strength in order to set up the event.
