University of Florida - Marian Vu

Most Outstanding VSA Member of the Year Nomination: Marian Vu

Why was this person selected as “Member of the Year” for your organization? What was the criteria to be a recipient of this award?

Marian Vu was selected as board member/officer of the year for our organization. We had an anonymous vote within our board and she was our resulting pick. She was also recently selected as outstanding officer by the Union of Vietnamese Student Associations of the Southeast at the Element Conference. That criteria was voted and decided by the UVSASE executive board.

Describe the roles the nominee has held in his/her community and how these roles have influenced your organization. Provide examples.

Marian was the 2018-2019 External Vice President for our Vietnamese Student Organization, as well as an active member in our UVSASE region, being on staff on multiple occasions. Previously, the University of Florida’s involvement was mostly limited to within our community. However, with Marian’s help, we have become more involved and branched out to our region as well as to other VSA’s. From her time on board, our attendance to UVSASE events like SELC and Element has drastically improved, seeing a roughly 10 person increase. From her ability to network with others, our relations with external VSA’s has improved tremendously. She encourages us to go out of our way to show support to other school events and in return, they have returned their support.

What qualities does the nominee have that makes him/her stand out within your organization? Provide examples.

When I think of the qualities, one specific one comes to mind. And that quality is passion. Marian is probably the most passionate person I have ever met. Her love for VSO/VSA/UVSASE is something I admire. She keeps everyone on board accountable of their tasks and is always pushing VSO towards the right direction. When people think of external vice president, they think of collaboration with outside organizations within the school. However due to Marian, our connections with other VSAs and specifically UVSASE, have reached an all time high. She goes above and beyond in not just her dedication to VSO, but the greater Vietnamese community. She attends other VSA events, always goes to every UVSASE event, and has established outside connections never done before. Literally everyone knows her. If you go up to anyone within the Southeast region and mention University of Florida, Marian will be the first person they bring up, showing just how involved she was. Her personality is contagious, which is why she had no problems making friendships with others. Her love for her culture has led her to apply to be on UVSASE’s Element staff, and if I think of anyone deserving of this award, Marian is the first person that comes to my mind. She truly does love her Vietnamese culture and she does everything she can to educate and encourage others to love their culture as well. She is very emotional when the topic of VSO/UVSASE is discussed, which shows the extent of her passion towards these orgs. She is the glue to our board and keeps us running as a well oiled machine. She reminds us everyday on board why we applied to begin with and inspires us to strive to make change to the greater Vietnamese community and to act as stewards of our amazing culture and organization.
