Volunteer Opportunities

APIA Identity Project
After a series of racially motivated incidents in 2009, uNAVSA was tired of the general reactive stance by our community on race relations.  We believe that while strong, coordinated responses to intolerable acts are required, we should be proactively engaging our communities to encourage an honest dialogue about race and ignorance.  uNAVSA, in partnership with several other national Asian American organizations (i.e. NAPA, ECAASU and MAASU), have created an unprecedented collaborative team to develop education materials targeting Asian American youth.  The campaign is aimed at educating Asian Americans about our history of activism, the strides we have made as a community over the past 50 years, and the continuing challenges we must still overcome.  Ranging from underrepresentation in higher education, to poor healthcare access, to the bamboo cieling, this project hopes to motivate a new generation of Asian American acitivitists to continue the work towards a fair and equal tomorrow.

Educating for Tomorrow
Southeast asians have the lowest rate of college or college-equivalent educations.  Rooted in that statistic are entrenched, systemic problems relating to the access to higher education.  As part of Educating for Tomorrow, uNAVSA is creating reference materials that profile the entire college application process, from how to make yourself competitive, to how to evaluate schools, to free SAT-prep resources, to navigating financial aid.  Concentrating on financial aid, we demystify the FAFSA, loan, and grant processes, also providing information on a wealth of scholarships targeting Asian Americans.  The materials will be bi-lingual, in English and Vietnamese, in an effort to involve our entire community in providing such a crucial stepping stone to the success of our future generations.

Leadership Workshop Series
uNAVSA is rooted in the leadership and personal development of the next generation of Vietnamese youth leaders.  Our annual uNAVSA conference is our flagship leadership program.  However, it serves as an introduction to community issues and skillsets that we hope attendees then explore further in practice by engaging their community.  uNAVSA is developing the Leadership Workshop Series as a curriculum of the major skills we believe are important to succeeding as a leader and team member in any setting, whether non-profit or corporate.  Designed as a series of workshops targeting specific skills ranging from communication to team dynamics, the Leadership Workshop Series will introduce newly-minted leaders to key topics while further developing the leadership skills of those more experienced.  Bringing in current leadership and communication theories, uNAVSA aims to bring the most relevant and challenging material to make it valuable to all current and aspiring youth leaders.
